About
Anela Ivanova is a Professor in Theoretical Chemistry, Head of the Laboratory of Quantum and Computational Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Sofia, Bulgaria and current Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. She was awarded a PhD degree in 2004 from Sofia University after a Marie Curie specialization at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany in 2001 and 2002 under the supervision of Prof. Martin Baumgarten. She was a post-doctoral fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation hosted by Prof. Notker Rösch at the Technical University Munich, Germany in the period 2006-2007. Her research focuses on simulations of the structure and function of lipid-, peptide- or protein-based biomolecular assemblies by classical all-atom molecular dynamics.

Working with BioExcel
GROMACS, one of the core applications of BioExcel, is the primary computational package used in Anela’s research. Its fast routines and rich analysis toolbox have enabled efficient tackling of a very diverse set of research problems. Anela has been collaborating with BioExcel for almost a decade. The exchange started with young researchers from her group attending BioExcel events and her taking part in joint trainings with scientists from the BioExcel team. Since 2023, Anela has joined the BioExcel Ambassador programme as the ambassador for Bulgaria. She has been disseminating BioExcel activities to the local community. Attending those has increased the awareness of the computational scientists in Bulgaria about the most imminent developments in the field of biomolecular simulations. The latest example of helpful collaboration is the successful BioExcel Balkan Workshop held in Sofia at the end of May, 2025. The event was organized as part of the BioExcel Ambassador programme by several countries from the Balkan region (Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro) and was attended by participants from more than 10 countries.
